Zayat Stable’s Baroness Thatcher (f, 4, Johannesburg), a Grade III winner and placed in no fewer than four Grade I events, proved a popular commodity Tuesday at Keeneland, fetching a final bid of $1.8 million from Patrick Biancone, agent. A $130,000 purchase from the 2006 FTMMAY two-year-olds in training sale, the chestnut won the GIII Santa Ysabel S. at three and was runner-up in the GI Las Virgenes S. (to Rags to Riches) and missed by a nose in the GI Ballerina S. against older females. She was also third in the GI Test S. versus her peers. Her 2008 campaign has featured just one win, but includes three graded placings, including a head second-place effort in the GI Humana Distaff S.
Elizabeth Moran picks out only fillies of the highest quality and added to her holdings Tuesday, going to $2.4 million to acquire Mushka (f, 3, Empire Maker) from the Zayat Stables draft at Keeneland. But before she takes her place in the Brushwood broodmare band, the 2007 GII Demoiselle S. winner, who recently scored an allowance victory on the turf at Keeneland, will have a chance to enhance her value. Moran confirmed that Mushka, the $1.6-million salestopper at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga in 2006, will remain in training with Bill Mott, who has conditioned her to date.
J Z Warrior (f, 3, Harlan’s Holiday), the first offering from the consignment of horses from Ahmed Zayat’s Zayat Stables, fetched a final bid of $1,125,000 from Olin Gentry, who was bidding on behalf of an undisclosed client. A TDN Rising Star when breaking her maiden by 10 lengths at Saratoga in July 2007, the bay filly has three stakes badges to her credit this season, including back-to-back wins in the Light Hearted S. at Monmouth Sept. 14 and the House Party S. at Belmont Oct. 12. She was also third in the GIII Nassau County S. J Z Warrior has a record of 11-4-2-2 and earnings of $220,813. Eaton Sales is handling the Zayat horses at Keeneland.
