American Pharoah confirmed for Aug. 29 Travers S. (G1)
Zayat Stables’ Triple Crown winner American Pharoah solidified his status for the Aug. 29 Travers S. (G1) after his impressive seven furlong work Sunday morning at Del Mar.

The 3-year-old colt worked in 1:23.20 under Martin Garcia, with splits of :23.00, :47.20, :58.80 and 1:10.60, getting the approval of both the Zayats and trainer Bob Baffert.

“He was more aggressive today,” Baffert said after the work. “He didn’t work all that fast last week and he wanted to get into it today. We wanted to see where his energy level is–to be sure he still has it. It’s incredible that he does after all this. Then again, he’s an incredible horse.”

Zayat also tweeted out that their homebred champion is headed to Saratoga for next weekend’s “Midsummer Derby”.

The Travers’ purse will be bumped from $1.25M to $1.6M because of American Pharoah’s participation.

American Pharoah’s ultimate goal is the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) Oct. 31 at Keeneland, though plans for any races between the Travers and then have yet to be announced.
