American Pharoah fires bullet at Del Mar
Triple Crown champion American Pharoah worked six furlongs in 1:11.40 under Martin Garcia Saturday morning at Del Mar as he prepares for his next start in the Aug. 2 Haskell Inv. (G1) at Monmouth Park.

The track’s official clockers had American Pharoah in splits of :24.0, :36.20, :59.20 en route to the bullet work, fastest of 12 on the day.

“I think the bit of rain we got this morning might have been good for the track. Tightened it up a bit,” said trainer Bob Baffert. “He went good. It was a good work for him. He needed it.”

After a short break following his historic Triple Crown run, American Pharoah has had four breezes since June 29, the previous three coming at Santa Anita before Baffert moved his stable south for the Del Mar meet.

Baffert said there are no plans regarding when the horse will work next, though he will probably have one more before the Haskell.

“We just go step by step with this horse,” Baffert said. “Every work, every race we just go day by day.”
