American Pharoah, Zayat finalists for 2015 Eclipse Awards
Zayat Stables’ 2015 Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner American Pharoah head the list of nominees for the 2015 Eclipse Awards.

American Pharoah was predictably a finalist for both Horse of the Year and 3-year-old male, when nominees were announced Wednesday morning from Gulfstream Park. The Eclipse champions will be announced during a ceremony at Gulfstream Park Jan. 16.

American Pharoah, who was 2-year-old male champion in 2014, is a virtual lock to win both awards this year as well following his historic campaign, which ended a 37-year Triple Crown drought. In addition to the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont and Breeders’ Cup wins, American Pharoah also romped in both the Haskell Inv. and Arkansas Derby, all Grade 1 events.

American Pharoah, a Zayat homebred by their stallion Pioneerof the Nile, amassed a one-year earnings record of $8,288,800. Zayat’s somewhat forgotten 3-year-old El Kabeir also had an excellent year, winning the Jerome S. (G3) and Gotham (G3) early in the year, and finished strong with a win in the City of Laurel S. in November as he prepares for his 2016 campaign.

Zayat Stables is also nominated in both the leading owner and breeder categories. Bolstered by American Pharoah, Zayat led all owners in 2015 with $10,000,226 in earnings. This is the second time the stable has led the owners’ earnings list, and the seventh time in the past decade they’ve finished in the top 10.
