Irish-bred Desert Stone trailed for the first six furlongs in his maiden-breaking win Friday at Santa Anita Park, circling the field in the final quarter-mile to win the 1 1/8-mile turf affair by 2 1/2-lengths (VIDEO).

Though he was last for much of the race, Desert Stone was never more than about five lengths from the leaders. He made a bold, four-wide move into the stretch and had no problem taking command and was drawing off at the end to win stylishly.

The winner is a son of Fastnet Rock (IRE) out of Starstone (GB) and is a half-brother to stakes winner Handassa (GB). Zayat Stables purchased 3-year-old Desert Stone as a yearling for $280,000 guineas at the Tattersalls October Sale.
