Irish Territory (IRE) scored a half-length maiden special weight win on Kentucky Derby day at Churchill Downs after a crafty ride from Junior Alvarado to get the 3-year-old colt to the wire just in front of Midnight Tea Time.

After breaking from post nine in the 12-horse field, Alvarado took his mount back and over to the rail going into the first turn. The field was fairly tightly bunched, with Irish Territory still on the rail in seventh after a half-mile in :47.47. Alvarado snuck past a few foes on the final turn, then went four-wide in the stretch, ultimately striking the front in the final sixteenth to stop the timer in 1:36.47 for the mile on the firm turf [WATCH RACE].

Trained by Bill Mott for Zayat, Irish Territory showed his class as a 2-year-old when he ran second to Catholic Boy in last year's With Anticipation S. (G3).  A son of Declaration of War, Irish Territory's dam Sleeping Beauty is a sister to Man o' War S. (G1) winner Zhukova (IRE).
