Prayer for Relief captures G3 Cornhusker H.
Zayat Stables' Prayer for Relief returned to the winner's circle on Saturday night with a 1 3/4 length victory in the Grade 3, $300,000 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker H.

Prayer for Relief, who had run second in both the Texas Mile (G3) and Lone Star H. (G3), would not be denied in the Cornhusker. With Ricardo Santana Jr. in the irons, Prayer for Relief was under a snug hold early, in fourth off a half-mile in 48.33 seconds and three-quarters in 1:12.62.

Taptowne took over from a tiring Silver Max coming into the stretch, but Santana kicked Prayer for Relief into gear to power to the lead inside the eighth pole to get the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.96.

“I knew I had a lot of horse,” Santana said. “I tried to wait.”

The victory for the 5-year-old Prayer for Relief was his first since the summer of his 3-year-old season, when he rattled off four straight victories, including scores in the Iowa Derby (G3), also at Prairie Meadows, the West Virginia Derby (G2) at Mountaineer, and the Super Derby (G2) at Louisiana Downs.

A son of Jump Start trained by Steve Asmussen, Prayer for Relief is now 6-5-4 in 21 lifetime starts. He has earned $1,419,725. He is Zayat Stables' second all-time leading earner, behind only Pioneerof the Nile.
