Solomini, Gidu top Zayat Triple Crown nominees
Zayat Stables' graded stakes-placed pair of Solomini and Gidu top a list of the stable's 3-year-olds nominated to the 2018 Triple Crown. Zayat leads all owners with 12 total nominees to the spring classics.

Leading the way is Solomini, who has suffered from some bad racing luck in his young career. After finishing second in both the FrontRunner S. (G1) and Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), he crossed the wire first in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1), only to be disqualified to third on a controversial decision.

Nevertheless, Solomini is one of trainer Bob Baffert's leading hopefuls for the Kentucky Derby (G1), and will likely make his first start of 2018 in either the March 10 San Felipe (G2) at Santa Anita Park or the Rebel S. (G2) the following weekend at Oaklawn Park.

Irish-bred Gidu, a son of the great Frankel, has made a name for himself on the turf to this point, winning a maiden race then losing a head-bob in the Dania Beach S. (G3) on Feb. 3, his first stakes start. He is trained by Todd Pletcher.

Irish Territory, who has not raced since placing in the With Anticipation S. (G3) Aug. 30 at Saratoga, is back in training in Florida with Bill Mott and is hoping to start within the next month.

Another colt who could make a splash is the promising Ezmosh. The Brad Cox-trainee was a very sharp maiden winner at Churchill Downs last September and was a solid second, beaten just a neck, in a quickly-run Oaklawn Park allowance on Jan. 13.

The Triple Crown kicks off with the May 5 Derby, then the Preakness (G1) on May 19 and finally the Belmont S. (G1) on June 9. Zayat's incomparable American Pharoah swept the series en route to Horse of the Year honors in 2015.
