Zatter breaks his maiden at first asking at Del Mar - Benoit photo
Zayat Stables’ 2-year-old colt Zatter was very sharp in his maiden special weight debut Aug. 20 at Del Mar, winning the six-furlong contest by 1 ½-lengths over St Patrick’s Day, who is a full brother to American Pharoah, in a rapid 1:10.36.

The top two finishers battled for the lead along with Jungle Warfare for the first half-mile, with Zatter on the far outside of the trio. Jungle Warfare began to weaken first, then Zatter put away St Patrick’s Day in the final furlong to secure the win.

Zatter picked up $36,000 for the win and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 84, one of the best 2-year-old numbers thus far in 2017.

The winner was purchased for $160,000 by Zayat at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling sale and is trained by Bob Baffert.
Zatter’s dam Katori is a half-sister to Blue Grass S. (G1) winner Monba.
